Alamogordo is a city located in Otero County, New Mexico, United States of America. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 35,582. The city name is a Spanish word meaning "fat cottonwood".
Alamogordo is the seat of Otero County. Situated in the arid desert of the White Sands, the city is surrounded by several beautiful mountain ranges. Alamogordo, county seat of Otero County, New Mexico, is the metropolitan center of the Tularosa Basin.

Alamogordo's economy is facilitated by Holloman Air Force Base (AFB), and the White Sands Missile range, which is owned and operated by the United States Army. Holloman is home to the F-117 Stealth Fighter Wing, the German Air Force contingent stationed in the U.S., and the High Speed Test Track.
The City benefits greatly from both of these installations and the revenue they produce, combining to make a $450 million dollar impact in the local economy.
Alamogordos climate is more moderate than other desert areas because of its high elevation and proximity to the mountain range, which acts as buffer from the wind's cold as well as allowing cooling rain showers in the hot summer heat.
With elevations ranging from 4,300 feet to 9,000 feet, the county has an ideal climate of warm days and cool nights. There are 350 days of sunshine each year. Winter days stay comfortable with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The basin averages 15 inches of precipitation per year, and 315 days are precipitation free. The months of July through August gets approximately six inches of moisture, while the mountain areas average 32 inches of precipitation and 92 inches of snow.
